Microneedling With Exosomes: Is It Right for You?
Microneedling has become one of the most trusted skin rejuvenation treatments in aesthetic medicine—and for good reason. By creating controlled micro-injuries in the skin, this procedure jumpstarts collagen production, improves texture, and reduces the appearance of scars, pores, and fine lines. In recent years, microneedling with exosomes has emerged as another option.
So what’s the difference between standard microneedling and microneedling with exosomes? And is one option better than the other? At Ageless Aesthetics, with three award-winning locations across Indianapolis, we help patients make informed decisions about their skin. Our providers offer customized microneedling consultations, including discussion of traditional and exosome options when appropriate for your needs and goals.
What Is Microneedling?
Microneedling, also called collagen induction therapy, involves using a handheld device with ultra-fine needles to create tiny punctures in the skin’s surface. These microchannels stimulate the body’s natural healing response, triggering the production of collagen and elastin—two essential proteins that keep skin firm, smooth, and youthful.
The process also improves product absorption. After microneedling, medical-grade serums can penetrate more deeply into the skin, maximizing their effects. Over time, patients experience more even tone, refined pores, and a fresher overall complexion.
Microneedling is safe for nearly all skin types and tones, and it’s commonly used to treat:
- Acne scars
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Enlarged pores
- Uneven skin tone
- Mild skin laxity
- Dullness or rough texture
How Can Exosomes Be Used With Microneedling?
Exosomes are extracellular vesicles used in some aesthetic protocols. Their source, processing, intended use, safety profile, and regulatory status vary by product and jurisdiction. A qualified provider should determine whether an exosome product is appropriate for use with microneedling and follow its approved instructions.
Do not carry forward this blood-draw and centrifugation description to an exosome protocol. Exosome product sourcing, preparation, handling, and use are product-specific; follow the manufacturer’s instructions and applicable clinical protocols.
Microneedling with exosomes may be an option for patients who want to:
- Boost skin healing and recovery
- Minimize post-treatment redness or inflammation
- Stimulate collagen on a deeper, cellular level
- Address more advanced signs of aging or scarring
The safety and tolerability of exosome products depend on the specific product, source, formulation, and protocol. A qualified provider should review potential risks, benefits, alternatives, and regulatory considerations with each patient.
Comparing the Two: Standard Microneedling vs. Microneedling With Exosomes
Both versions of microneedling are effective, but each has its own strengths depending on what your skin needs.
Standard microneedling is highly effective for texture refinement, superficial lines, and overall glow. It’s ideal for patients who are new to skin treatments or want a simple, results-driven procedure without any blood draw.
Microneedling with exosomes uses a product containing extracellular vesicles. Do not characterize it as a preparation from the patient’s blood unless the product documentation supports that statement. Whether it is appropriate for concerns such as acne scars, sun damage, or collagen loss depends on the individual, the product, and the provider’s assessment. Discuss expected outcomes, costs, risks, and alternatives with a qualified provider.
Here’s a simple way to think of it:
- Choose standard microneedling for: light resurfacing, glow, texture, and preventative care
- Consider microneedling with exosomes only after a qualified provider has reviewed your goals, the product, risks, alternatives, and expected outcomes
What to Expect from Your Treatment
Regardless of which method you choose, the process at Ageless Aesthetics is designed for comfort and precision. Before treatment, we apply a numbing cream to help make your experience as comfortable as possible. The procedure typically takes 45 to 60 minutes. If exosomes are incorporated, the provider follows the specific product instructions; treatment requirements, including whether a blood draw is involved, must be confirmed from that protocol rather than assumed from the former treatment.
After microneedling, you may experience redness or mild swelling, similar to a sunburn, which may resolve within a few days. Recovery and results vary. If exosomes are incorporated, follow the provider’s product-specific aftercare instructions and discuss expected recovery, risks, and alternatives before treatment.
For best results, we often recommend a series of 3 treatments spaced about 4 weeks apart, followed by maintenance sessions 2–3 times per year.
