Is Permanent Makeup Worth It? 7 Benefits of Microblading and Lip Blushing
If you’ve been thinking about microblading or lip blushing, you’ve probably asked yourself the big question: Is permanent makeup actually worth it?
Maybe your brows aren’t quite what they used to be. Maybe you over-tweezed them in the ’90s (we’ve all made choices). Maybe your natural lip color and definition have started to fade. Or maybe you’re just really, really overfilling in your brows every single morning.
Permanent makeup can help your brows and lips without making you look like someone else. Think better definition, more balanced brows, a boost of natural-looking lip color, and fewer minutes spent getting ready.
And at Ageless Aesthetics, looking like yourself is kind of our thing.
Enter Ashley Grant, our resident permanent makeup pro. With more than 15 years of experience in aesthetics, Ashley approaches microblading and lip blushing with the same philosophy we bring to everything at Ageless: enhance what’s already good. Don’t overdo it.
So, is permanent makeup worth the hype? Let’s get into it.
First Things First: What Is Permanent Makeup?
Permanent makeup, sometimes called PMU or cosmetic tattooing, uses pigment to enhance features like eyebrows and lips. Two of the most popular options are microblading and lip blushing.
Microblading focuses on the brows. Fine, hair-like strokes are created to give sparse or uneven brows the appearance of greater shape, fullness, and definition.
Lip blushing enhances the natural color and definition of your lips. Think of it as your lips getting their color back, not signing a lifetime contract with your favorite lipstick.
Both treatments are customized to your features, coloring, and goals.
Because when it comes to permanent makeup, one-size-fits-all brows are a hard no.
Microblading vs. Lip Blushing: What’s the Difference?
Microblading and lip blushing are both types of permanent makeup, but they do very different jobs.
Microblading is all about the brows. It can create the appearance of individual brow hairs to fill sparse areas, improve definition, and create a more balanced shape.
Lip blushing adds pigment to the lips to enhance their natural-looking color and definition. It can be especially appealing if your lips have become less vibrant over time or you want a little more definition without applying lip color every morning.
Brows need help? Microblading.
Lips looking a little blah? Lip blushing.
Want both? We like the way you think.
7 Benefits of Permanent Makeup
So, why are people willing to commit to pigment instead of their trusty brow pencil?
Permanent makeup has some pretty convincing perks.
1. Permanent Makeup Can Save You Time
If filling in your brows is part of your daily routine, imagine simply…not doing it.
Microblading gives your brows shape and definition before you even reach the bathroom mirror. Lip blushing can give your lips a natural-looking boost of color before you reach for the gloss.
Does it mean you have to break up with your makeup bag forever? Absolutely not.
You can still add brow products, lipstick, gloss, or anything else whenever you want. You just may not feel like you need them every day.
Ten extra minutes in bed? We’ll take it.
2. It Won’t Sweat Off at the Worst Possible Moment
You know what’s not fun? Spending 10 minutes perfecting your brows only to sweat half of one off during a workout.
Once your permanent makeup has fully healed, pigment doesn’t simply wash away like traditional brow pencils, powders, or lip products.
Work out. Swim. Shower. Travel. Survive an Indiana summer.
Your brows aren’t going anywhere just because things got a little sweaty.
Permanent makeup does gradually fade over time, and factors such as sun exposure, skincare, skin type, and lifestyle can affect how your pigment ages. But day-to-day? You can stop worrying about whether your eyebrow made it through Pilates.
3. Microblading Can Look Seriously Natural
This is one of the biggest concerns we hear about permanent makeup.
“What if my eyebrows look fake?”
Fair question.
Nobody wants to ask for a subtle brow enhancement and leave wondering why their eyebrows entered the room five minutes before they did.
Great microblading should complement your face, not compete with it. Individual hair-like strokes can be used to create the appearance of fuller, more defined brows while working with the brow hair you already have.
Ashley doesn’t have one favorite brow shape to copy and paste onto every face. Your design is based on your natural brow growth, facial structure, coloring, symmetry, preferences, and how subtle or defined you want your finished brows to look.
The goal isn’t to give you someone else’s eyebrows.
It’s your brows. Just better.
That natural-results philosophy runs through everything we do at Ageless Aesthetics. We’re much more interested in making people wonder why you look so good than making it obvious what you had done.
4. Lip Blushing Gives Faded Lips a Little Life Again
Brows tend to steal the permanent makeup spotlight, but your lips would like a word.
Natural lip color and definition can fade over time. Lip blushing uses customized pigment to enhance your natural lip tone and border, creating a fresher, more defined look.
And before you panic, no, this does not mean choosing one lipstick color and wearing it every second for the foreseeable future.
Lip blushing can be soft and subtle.
Ashley works with your coloring, natural lip tone, and goals to choose a result that makes sense for you.
Think your lips, but perkier.
5. Your Permanent Makeup Is Customized to You
If you’ve spent any time on the Ageless website, you probably already know how we feel about cookie-cutter aesthetic treatments.
We don’t do them.
Your face has its own proportions, coloring, features, and personality. Your permanent makeup should respect that.
Before treatment, Ashley considers your natural brows or lips, facial structure, coloring, symmetry, skin, and personal preferences. With microblading, she maps your brows before beginning so you can see the proposed shape and talk through any changes.
Want barely-there definition? Tell us.
Want a little more polish? We can talk about that too.
Not sure what you want? That’s okay. You don’t need to walk into Ageless knowing exactly what treatment or shape you need. Our job is to help you figure it out.
You can meet the Ageless Aesthetics team and learn more about our approach to personalized aesthetic care before your visit.
6. Old Permanent Makeup May Be Correctable
Have old microblading you’d rather forget?
We’ve seen it.
Maybe your previous brows faded into a color you weren’t expecting. Maybe the shape feels dated. Maybe they’re uneven, too bold, or simply no longer you.
Permanent makeup correction is one of Ashley’s specialties.
Correction is usually more complicated than starting with untouched skin because there is already pigment present. Ashley needs to evaluate the existing color, shape, saturation, your skin, and what you ultimately want your brows to look like.
And sometimes the answer isn’t simply putting more pigment on top.
Every correction needs to be evaluated individually to determine what’s possible and what approach makes the most sense.
So, if bad microblading from years ago has you convinced you can never trust anyone with your brows again, don’t write permanent makeup off completely.
Let Ashley take a look first.
7. Your Everyday Routine Gets a Whole Lot Easier
Permanent makeup isn’t about looking fully made-up 24/7.
It gives you a better starting point.
Your brows already have some shape. Your lips already have some color. You can roll out of bed and look a little more put together without actually doing anything.
And when you do want full glam? Go for it.
You can still wear brow makeup, lipstick, gloss, or whatever else makes you happy once your permanent makeup has fully healed.
Permanent makeup simply gives you the freedom to need less when you want to.
How Long Do Microblading and Lip Blushing Last?
Here’s where the word “permanent” gets a little confusing.
Permanent makeup is long-lasting, but that doesn’t mean your brows or lips will look exactly the same forever.
Pigment gradually fades over time. How quickly that happens varies based on your skin, sun exposure, skincare routine, lifestyle, treatment area, and how your skin retains pigment.
Touch-ups may be recommended to keep your results looking fresh.
And honestly, some fading is a good thing.
Your face changes. Your coloring can change. Your preferences change. And beauty trends definitely change. We’re pretty sure anyone who survived the skinny-brow era can confirm that one.
Your permanent makeup should have room to evolve with you.
What Is Permanent Makeup Healing Really Like?
We’re not going to pretend you walk out of your appointment with fully healed brows or lips.
Permanent makeup requires a healing period.
Your pigment may look more noticeable than the final result at first, and it can change throughout the healing process. That’s normal, and it’s one reason you shouldn’t judge the final color immediately after treatment.
Ashley will explain what to expect and how to care for the area at home. You’ll also receive a complimentary aftercare kit, because figuring out aftercare shouldn’t require a second Google degree.
Follow those instructions. Seriously.
Good aftercare is part of getting a good result.
Does Microblading or Lip Blushing Hurt?
Ah, yes. The question you were definitely going to Google.
Does microblading hurt? What about lip blushing?
Permanent makeup isn’t necessarily sensation-free, and everyone’s tolerance is different. What one person considers mildly uncomfortable might feel different to someone else.
The good news is that you’ll know what’s happening.
Ashley will walk you through the process before, during, and after your appointment. For microblading, she’ll also map your brows beforehand so you can visualize the shape before treatment begins.
Nervous? Tell us.
Have 47 questions? Ask all 47.
Our appointments are designed to feel approachable, informative, and decidedly unstuffy. You can also read about what to expect during your first visit to Ageless Aesthetics before you come in.
Are There Any Downsides to Permanent Makeup?
Okay, we’ve hyped up the good stuff. Let’s keep it real.
Permanent makeup isn’t for everyone.
There’s an upfront investment. There’s a healing period. The pigment fades over time, so you may need touch-ups. And because we are talking about your face, choosing an experienced artist matters. A lot.
Poor color selection, the wrong shape, or an overly aggressive result can be difficult to correct.
This is one beauty treatment where bargain shopping probably shouldn’t be your strategy.
Look at your artist’s experience and aesthetic style. Ask to see results. Talk about your expectations. Make sure you feel comfortable trusting the person with your face.
Natural-looking aesthetic results depend heavily on the person doing the work, which is why choosing the right aesthetic provider matters.
Why Your Permanent Makeup Artist Matters
PMU is an art.
Yes, training matters. Technique matters. Experience matters.
But so does having an eye for proportion, balance, color, and all those tiny details that determine whether your finished result looks like it naturally belongs on your face.
With more than 15 years in aesthetics, Ashley has worked with different faces, brow patterns, lips, preferences, and previous permanent makeup. She approaches each treatment individually rather than chasing whatever brow or lip trend happens to be having its moment online.
You can learn more about Ashley Grant before scheduling your appointment.
At Ageless, we’re big believers in timeless over trendy. The goal isn’t to make your treatment obvious.
The goal is for you to look dang good.
Is Microblading or Lip Blushing Right for Me?
Permanent makeup may be worth considering if you’re tired of filling in sparse brows, want more definition or balance, have noticed your brows or natural lip color changing with age, live an active lifestyle, or simply want to spend less time doing your makeup.
Microblading may make sense if your biggest concern is your brows. Lip blushing may be worth considering if you want to enhance your natural lip color and definition.
And if you have previous permanent makeup you’re not exactly thrilled about, you can talk with Ashley about whether correction may be possible.
Still not sure what you need?
Good news: you don’t have to.
That’s what consultations are for.
Permanent Makeup FAQs
Is permanent makeup actually permanent?
Permanent makeup is designed to be long-lasting, but pigment gradually fades over time. Skin type, sun exposure, skincare, lifestyle, treatment area, and individual pigment retention can all affect how your results age. Touch-ups may be recommended to maintain your preferred color and definition.
Does microblading look natural?
It absolutely can. Microblading uses fine, hair-like strokes to create the appearance of brow hairs and improve shape and definition. The most natural-looking results come from customizing the brow design to your existing hair, facial structure, coloring, and preferences.
Is lip blushing the same as permanent lipstick?
Nope. Lip blushing can be much more subtle. Rather than making your lips look like they’re covered in lipstick every day, the treatment can enhance your natural-looking color and definition. Your shade is customized based on your coloring and desired result.
Can I still wear eyebrow makeup after microblading?
Once your brows are fully healed and you’ve been cleared to return to your normal routine, you can absolutely still use brow products. You just might find that you don’t need them nearly as often.
Can I wear lipstick after lip blushing?
Yes, once your lips have fully healed and Ashley has cleared you to resume using your normal lip products. Lip blushing doesn’t marry you to one look. You can still add lipstick, gloss, liner, or whatever your makeup-loving heart desires.
Can bad microblading be corrected?
Sometimes. Whether previous microblading can be corrected depends on the existing pigment, color, shape, saturation, your skin, and the result you want. Ashley evaluates each case individually before deciding whether correction is appropriate.
How do I choose a permanent makeup artist?
Look at more than price. Consider experience, training, aesthetic style, customization, and examples of the artist’s work. You should also feel comfortable discussing exactly what you want, what you don’t want, and what you can realistically expect from treatment.
